Databases
Important information: database management and distribution has been recently centralized in the framework of the CTDP, the Common Thermodynamic Database Project. Maintenance of the thermodynamic data files below has been abandonned, since we recommend to switch to the CTDP database.
This page provides a number of thermodynamic databases formatted to work with CHESS version 2.3 and later. We distinguish, very globally, three groups of databases:
- the Helgeson/Wolery databases, for pure geochemistry (very complete, notably with respect to mineral phases) and well adapted for relatively high temperature ranges. The databases chess.tdb, eq36.tdb and tdbvit0.tdb belong to this family.
- the MINTEQ/PHREEQC/WATEQ4F family, well adapted to subsurface, relatively low temperature conditions and quite complete with respect to (in)organic complexes. They are, however, much smaller than the first family, notably with respect to mineral phases.
- the nuclear databases, dedicated to radioactive phases. Only the NEA database falls within this family, since we stopped supporting the CHEMVAL database.
If you have no specific needs, then it is advised to use chess.tdb, the moderated CHESS database (derived from the EQ3/6 database) including organic and inorganic colloidal phases.
All databases have been converted to CDF and are available for free download. During conversion, an effort has been made to detect typos, inconsistencies and anomalies. These aspects are described in the short notes. The databases are proposed in compressed or uncompressed format. Compression is based on the public domain 'gzip' utility. You can grab this utility by anonymous ftp from e.g. ftp://ftp.jussieu.fr/pub/gnu. MS-Windows users can use the winzip or pkunzip utilities.

| Providing new databases |
This page can be used to distribute new databases. If you would like to publish your database, then provide me with a link to your ftp-site or send it by E-mail (compressed with gzip, for example) to chess@geosciences.ensmp.fr. Another option is to provide me with a link to some http or ftp site where the database can be obtained.
