PATCHES
Since the release of version 2.0 several bugs have been reported. One of the most annoying bug concerns windows XP (and windows 2000?): some errors, although properly detected by CHESS, are not 'bubbled up' to the user via a pop-up window and JCHESS seems to hang.

Note: the upgrade only applies to MS-Windows. Linux and Mac OS X users are not concerned!

Upgrade instructions

Note that you must have installed version 2.0 of JCHESS to be able to upgrade your software.

  • Back up the current version. Find the JCHESS installation directory and make a copy of the directory with the binaries (usually something like C:\JChess\bin).
  • Download the patch and unzip the archive (Note for Windows XP users : double-clicking on the file does not unzip the archive, but merely shows you the content. You must explicitly unzip the archive, the upgrade will fail otherwise).
  • After unzipping, you will see a file named JChessPatch and a directory patches. Double-click on JChessPatch and follow the instructions.
  • After installation, launch JCHESS and verify its version and release number (menu 'About' -> 'JChess'). You should see release 5.

Trouble shooting

Something went wrong: the upgrade didn't work as expected or your JChess version won't start up anymore?

  • Copy back your backed-up version of the binary directory (see above). Now your previous version should be working again.
  • Did you realy unpack the archive (see 'Note for XP users' above). If not, unpack the archive (right-click on the archive, click on something like 'uncompress' (sorry, I cannot be more precise since I do not have XP at work...)) and re-install the patch.
